Problem Statement

Traditional supermarket checkout systems cause long queues, extended wait times, and overcrowding, especially during peak hours. Customers pick items and then wait in line while each product is scanned individually. This process lowers shopping efficiency, increases dependency on staff, and often leads to customer dissatisfaction. Stores also face higher costs from needing multiple checkout counters and extra staff during busy periods. There is a need for a fast, self-service system that lets customers scan and add items to their cart while shopping, using smart carts, mobile apps, or automatic product-recognition technology. Our system shows the running cost in real time, supports payment methods like UPI, card, and cash, and ensures accurate billing. It also maintains real-time inventory tracking and includes checks to prevent missed or unpaid items, ensuring a smooth and efficient checkout experience.

Solution

SMART CART : Your personal AI shopping assistant on wheels — auto scans items, talks you through the store, shows live costs, and lets you pay on the spot. Smarter Shopping, Zero Checkout Lines.

In Detail

Writing SmartCart is an AI-powered smart trolley system designed to transform the traditional shopping experience by making the entire process faster, more convenient, transparent, and efficient for both customers and retailers. In a conventional supermarket, customers typically spend a considerable amount of time selecting products, waiting in checkout queues, unloading their purchases, making payments, and finally collecting their bills before leaving the store. SmartCart is designed to eliminate this checkout bottleneck by integrating product scanning, live billing, artificial intelligence, voice assistance, in-store navigation, product verification, multiple payment methods, and real-time inventory management into a single connected shopping system. The primary objective of SmartCart is to allow customers to complete their shopping journey with minimal waiting and without depending on a traditional checkout counter. As customers move through the store, they can scan products using the smart cart’s built-in scanner, a companion mobile application, or automatic product-recognition technology. Every product that is scanned is immediately identified and added to a continuously updated digital shopping bill. The customer can therefore see the products they have selected and the total amount they are spending while they are still shopping. This provides greater transparency and allows customers to maintain better control over their purchases instead of discovering the final amount only after reaching the checkout counter. The SmartCart concept begins with the simple idea of bringing the checkout process directly to the customer. In a traditional supermarket, the customer spends most of the shopping journey physically selecting products, but the final billing process is separated from the shopping process. Customers usually have to take their trolley to a checkout counter, wait for their turn, unload products onto a conveyor belt or counter, allow a cashier or scanner to process every item, make the payment, and then pack or collect their products again. This process can become particularly inconvenient during busy hours when many customers are shopping at the same time. SmartCart changes this process by allowing product identification and billing to happen continuously throughout the shopping journey. When a customer picks up a product, the product can be scanned immediately and added to the cart’s digital bill. The customer does not have to wait until the end of the trip to know the total cost of the selected products. Instead, the cart maintains a live representation of the shopping basket, creating a more transparent and interactive shopping experience. One of the most important features of SmartCart is its built-in product scanning capability. The smart trolley can include a scanner that allows customers to scan the barcode or other identification information of products as they place them into the cart. Once the product is scanned, the system identifies the item and retrieves its relevant information from the store’s product database. This can include the product name, price, and other information required for billing. The selected product is then added to the customer’s virtual shopping basket. The cart display can continuously show the items that have been scanned along with the running total. This means that customers can immediately understand what they have purchased and how much they are expected to pay. If a customer changes their mind and decides not to purchase an item, the corresponding product can be removed from the digital basket according to the system’s removal and verification process. The goal is to make the billing process an integrated part of shopping rather than a separate activity that happens only at the end.voice assistant help to guide us .
