ResQMesh

Problem Statement

During natural disasters, accidents, and other emergencies, conventional communication systems such as mobile networks, internet services, and power infrastructure can become damaged, overloaded, or completely unavailable. This creates a major communication gap between affected people, rescue teams, emergency responders, and authorities. Victims may be unable to send their location, request immediate assistance, or share critical information. Rescue teams may also face difficulties coordinating operations, tracking affected areas, and communicating in locations with poor or no network coverage. Existing communication methods often depend heavily on centralized infrastructure, making them unreliable during large-scale emergencies or in remote regions. Therefore, there is a need for a reliable, low-cost, portable, and independent communication system that can continue operating even when conventional networks fail. The system should enable emergency messaging, location sharing, and coord

Solution

ResQMesh is a decentralized emergency communication system using LoRa and ESP32 devices. It creates a mesh network for sending SOS alerts, messages, and GPS locations without mobile networks or internet, enabling reliable communication and faster rescue coordination.

In Detail

ResQMesh is a decentralized emergency communication and rescue coordination system designed to maintain communication during disasters and other critical situations when conventional communication infrastructure such as mobile networks, internet services, and power systems becomes unavailable, damaged, or overloaded. The proposed system uses LoRa communication technology and ESP32-based devices to create an independent wireless network. Unlike traditional communication systems that depend on mobile towers, internet connectivity, or centralized servers, ResQMesh allows devices to communicate directly with one another. This makes the system useful in disaster-affected areas, remote locations, and other situations where regular communication systems cannot be relied upon. Each ResQMesh device functions as a communication node. When a person sends an emergency message or SOS alert, the device transmits the information to nearby nodes. These nodes can relay or forward the message across the network, extending the communication range beyond a single device's direct transmission distance. This creates a decentralized mesh-like communication system that can continue functioning without depending entirely on one central point of failure. The system can also include a GPS module to determine the user's location. During an emergency, a user can send an SOS alert containing important information such as the user's identity or device ID, emergency status, and current GPS coordinates. This information can be transmitted through the ResQMesh network and received by rescue teams, emergency coordinators, or a designated control station. A major advantage of ResQMesh is its ability to operate independently of conventional infrastructure. In situations such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, building collapses, or remote-area emergencies, mobile towers and internet connections may become unavailable. ResQMesh provides an alternative communication channel that can help affected individuals share critical information even when traditional methods fail. The system is designed to be portable, low-cost, and energy-efficient. LoRa technology supports long-range wireless communication while consuming relatively low power, making it suitable for battery-powered emergency devices. ESP32-based development boards provide processing capability and can interface with components such as GPS modules, displays, buttons, buzzers, and sensors. ResQMesh can provide several important functions. Users can send emergency alerts, short text messages, and location information. Rescue teams can receive these alerts and identify the approximate location of people requesting assistance. A control unit or monitoring station can collect incoming messages and help organize rescue operations based on the available information. The decentralized structure also improves the reliability of the system. Traditional communication systems often depend on centralized infrastructure, meaning that damage to a mobile tower, server, or network connection can affect a large number of users. In ResQMesh, communication can continue through available nodes, reducing dependence on a single communication point. The proposed system can be expanded by deploying additional nodes in disaster-prone regions, emergency shelters, rescue vehicles, hospitals, or remote communities. More nodes can increase network coverage and provide additional communication paths. Overall, ResQMesh provides a practical solution for emergency communication when conventional networks are unavailable. By combining LoRa, ESP32 devices, GPS-based location sharing, SOS alerts, and decentralized message forwarding, the system aims to improve communication between affected individuals and rescue teams. This can support faster information sharing, better coordination, and a more effective emergency response during critical situations.
