Problem Statement

Every second matters in an emergency, yet ambulances often lose valuable time waiting at traffic signals and navigating congested roads.

Solution

An RFID and ESP32-based system detects authorized ambulances and coordinates multiple traffic signals to provide priority along their route, creating a temporary green corridor and reducing delays.

In Detail

We propose a "Smart Emergency Green Corridor" using RFID and ESP32 to reduce ambulance delays at traffic signals. An RFID tag with a unique ID is attached to the ambulance, while RFID readers are placed near traffic junctions. When the ambulance approaches, the reader detects the tag and sends its ID to an ESP32 through SPI communication. The ESP32 verifies whether the detected ID belongs to an authorized ambulance. Once verified, the ESP32 activates "Emergency Mode" and temporarily prioritizes the ambulance's direction by controlling the traffic signals. For multiple junctions, the system coordinates the signals along the ambulance's route, allowing the ambulance to pass through consecutive intersections with minimum waiting. After the ambulance passes, the signals automatically return to their normal cycle. The prototype will demonstrate this using an RFID-tagged model ambulance, RFID readers, ESP32, and LED-based traffic signals. This system aims to reduce ambulance travel delays and improve emergency response in future smart cities.
