Sensor-Based Waste Plastic-to-3D Printing Filament System

Problem Statement

Waste plastic is increasing rapidly, while many plastics are difficult to recycle effectively. Mixed or contaminated plastics can also affect the quality and strength of 3D-printing filament and may damage the processing equipment. Therefore, there is a need for an automated system that identifies the selected plastic, detects unwanted/contaminated plastic using sensors, automatically stops the machine when contamination is detected, and converts suitable waste plastic into reusable 3D-printing filament.

Solution

Sensor-based plastic identification, automatic contamination detection, and shutdown system for converting suitable waste plastic into 3D-printing filament.

In Detail

The proposed system converts suitable waste plastic into 3D-printing filament while preventing contaminated or unwanted plastic from entering the extrusion process. 1.) Plastic collection & sorting – Collect waste plastic and select the required plastic type. Plastic identification – A NIR sensor identifies the type of plastics. 3.) Automatic control – An Arduino receives the sensor signal and makes the decision. 4.)Automatic shutdown – If contamination is detected, the Arduino activates a relay to stop the motor/heater and gives a buzzer alert. 5.)Shredding – Approved plastic is shredded into small flakes. 6.)Drying – Moisture is removed before processing. 7.)Extrusion – The plastic is heated and pushed through a nozzle to form a continuous filament. 8.)Cooling & spooling – The filament is cooled, its diameter can be monitored, and it is wound onto a spool. Final product – The recycled filament can be used for suitable 3D-printing applications.
