Problem Statement
“An earthquake may be unstoppable, but the loss of life it causes is not entirely unavoidable.” Disasters become more devastating when critical information fails to reach the right people at the right time. During an earthquake, seismic waves travel at different speeds, creating a short but potentially lifesaving window to warn distant locations before stronger shaking arrives. Yet detection alone is insufficient; the event must be verified, risk assessed, and the warning reliably delivered with clear instructions for immediate action. This challenge is greater for remote and vulnerable communities, including coastal populations and fishermen, where communication may be limited or disrupted. Similar challenges exist during tsunamis, cyclones, and floods. The goal is: Detection → Verification → Risk Assessment → Multi-Channel Warning → Context-Specific Action Every available second should become an opportunity for safety. MOTTO: “TURN TIME INTO SAFETY.”
Solution
A resilient early-warning and action system that detects hazards early, verifies and assesses risk, delivers warnings through multiple communication channels, and provides context-specific safety instructions—turning every available second into an opportunity for protection.
In Detail
EARTHGUARD — Resilient Disaster Early-Warning and Action System EARTHGUARD is a resilient early-warning framework designed to bridge the gap between hazard detection and human action. The primary prototype focuses on earthquakes, with future expansion to tsunamis, cyclones, floods and landslides. Detection → Verification → Risk Assessment → Multi-Channel Warning → Context-Specific Action 1. Distributed Detection: Multiple seismic sensors using ESP32/Arduino, accelerometers, vibration sensors or geophones monitor ground motion and identify abnormal signals. 2. Signal Verification: Noise filtering, amplitude, frequency, time-window analysis and multi-sensor confirmation help distinguish earthquakes from environmental disturbances. 3. Risk Assessment: Signal strength, sensor agreement, location, distance, confidence and potential intensity determine warning levels. 4. Multi-Channel Warning: Alerts can reach users through smartphones, LoRa receivers, local alarms/displays and, as a future extension, satellite communication for remote/offshore communities. 5. Context-Specific Action: Warnings provide appropriate instructions for the public, schools, hospitals and coastal communities. 6. Prototype: A controlled seismic event will trigger detection, verification, warning generation, alarms, smartphone alerts and a live dashboard displaying sensor activity, confidence, warning level and communication status. Core Principle: Detection alone does not save lives; **turning early information into rapid, reliable and actionable warnings does.** MOTTO: “TURN TIME INTO SAFETY.”
